The Berlin Windowing System
The Berlin windowing system is a bold alternative to X that allows more functionality to be handled directly on the windowing server. Given that X is currently the backbone underlying pretty well all client-server-based computer graphics technology, responses to Stefan Seefeld's work have in the past ranged from enthusiasm to bemusement and moral indignation.
