Featuring Martin Hélie from Discreet and Victor Ostromoukhov from the Computer Graphics Lab of the University of Montreal

For many years, analog and digital techniques have been developed to generate images of realistic or imaginary worlds.

This session of Montreal ACM SIGGRAPH will explore the domains of modern computer graphics, vision, image processing, cognitive science and experimental psychology. The speakers will focus on the magic behind the image compositing and visual effects creation, as well as the science of colour.

Martin Hélie will explain how compositing works, as well as some shooting techniques (motion control, etc.) and how they are used in the production pipeline. He will also present how to mix 2D and 3D data to produce frames in films and commercials.

What's behind the art and science of the "Trompe L'Oeil"? From the story board to the celluloid, how far can the effects guys go? Turn off your cell phones, hold on to your pop-corn and keep your eyes wide open!

Color plays important role in many human activities, in our everyday life. Since the Antiquity, people tried explain the complex phenomenon of color vision. In his talk, Victor Ostromoukhov will present different facets of color, as seen by painters and art critics, by computer graphics people, and by experimental psychologists and neuroscientists. He shall overview the basic concepts of modern color science, including the latest standards for color appearance models used in the imaging technology.

Martin Hélie is a Product Specialist at Discreet, and formerly a Flame instructor.

Associate Professor at the Computer Graphics Lab of the University of Montreal, Victor Ostromoukhov has contributed to the science of the perception, manipulation and reproduction of color in image-making, in computer graphics and in the printing industry. He has presented his work all over the world, including at the annual SIGGRAPH conference.
