Myriam Côté (Automa); Michel Besner (Kaydara); Rémi Brun (Attitude Studio).

Character animation pipelines for today's film and video games are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Motion capture is an increasingly important method for producing realistic and expressive motion, and at the same time, keyframing methods continue to play an essential and complementary role. Productivity issues are also becoming critical as the complexity and volume of content increases.

Myriam Côté will start the evening by introducing us to the technology used to insert animated characters and other virtual elements into live-action films. She will show us how 3D trajectories are reconstructed from sequences of images, and give an inside view on the R&D challenge companies face in developing such technology.

Michel Besner will follow with a broad overview of character animation and the state of the 3D industry.

Finally, Remi Brun will show us how both motion capture and keyframing pipelines were combined in the animation of Lara Croft and other characters in 27 minutes of cut-scenes for the upcoming video game "Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness". He will explain the special considerations unique to motion capture pipelines, and demonstrate some advanced features of Kaydara's MOTIONBUILDER that helped them manage the complexities of multiple characters having different shapes and sizes, and allowed them to produce such a large volume of content. He will also discuss 3D layouts, facial and eye animation and the vital role of a real-time engine in the overall workflow. He will conclude by explaining why the industry needs more training and hard thinking about 'moves' in general.

Myriam Côté

Researcher and software developer at Avtoma R&D in Montreal, she was involved in the development of digital visual effects using optical flow computation. As a consultant for Big Bang FX/Animation, she works on camera tracking and 3D reconstruction from images. Myriam holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics Engineering from Université Laval, Québec, a Master's degree in Optics and Photonics from Université Paris XI, a Master's degree in Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence from Université Pierre et Marie Curie, and a PhD in Pattern Recognition from École Polytechnique de Montréal.

Michel Besner

Over the past decade, Michel Besner, President and co-founder of Kaydara Inc., has proven to be a pioneer in improving and expanding the possibilities of 3D graphics. Prior to co-founding Kaydara, Michel Besner worked in the technology industry, specifically in the development of bio-medical applications for cardiography. Michel has also served as a consultant in the fields of previsualization and real-time medical simulation, as well as graphics production. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from l'École Polytechnique de Montréal.

Rémi Brun

As the Motion Capture Director at Attitude Studio, Rémi Brun oversees the production of all the company projects, from before the capture through the 3D integration process. Graduate of the "Arts et Métiers", engineering studies and holder of a PhD in biomechanics, Rémi Brun is truly a motion capture pionneer. Since 1993, Rémi has been working with leading optical motion capture systems from BTS, Elite and Motion Analysis. He currently operates Attitude's 12 camera Vicon 8 Motion Capture system. Throughout his career, Rémi has managed over 100 motion capture projects for the European market, including classic captures (sport, dance, fighting, actor performances) and highly complex ones (facial expressions, hands, crawling babies, horses and riders, digs, cats, pythons, etc.) for the video game, internet, advertising, video, and television markets.
