Featuring Bill Buxton, Chief Scientist at Alias|Wavefront
An accepted common wisdom is that only large companies like IBM and XEROX can afford to do advanced research. Even then -as has been the case with Xerox- it is often difficult for the company to benefit commercially from the investment. What hope is there for the small- or medium-sized enterprise?
By examining the case study of Alias|Wavefront, one of the world's leading 3D graphics companies, Bill Buxton will turn that question on its head. The real question is, what hope is there for the small- or medium-sized enterprise that does not invest in pure research?
Bill Buxton is a designer and a researcher concerned with human aspects of technology. His work reflects a particular interest in the use of technology to support creative activities such as design, film making and music. Buxton's research specialties include technologies, techniques and theories of input to computers, technology mediated human-human collaboration, and ubiquitous computing. He is Chief Scientist of Alias|Wavefront, Inc., and its parent company SGI Inc., as well as an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto.
